Police: Yard sale purchase suspected to be military ordnance

Military officials out of Patrick Air Force Base came into town to inspect the object.

An Orlando man's harmless yard-sale purchase prompted a visit from U.S. Air Force officials when it turned out the item he bought possibly was some kind of unexploded military ordnance, police said.

Orlando Police Lt. Russell Waters said that when George Macnamara took his newly-bought device to his East Washington Street home and opened it, he realized the object may not be have been as harmless as he thought.

He called 911, and police shut down an adjacent street until the bomb squad arrived, Waters said.

But Orange County Fire Rescue personnel weren't sure about the device either, so military personnel stationed at Patrick Air Force Base in Brevard County were called into town to inspect the item, Waters said.

Neighboring homes were not evacuated.
