Missouri man facing charges for allegedly shooting at plane in Caldwell County

KIDDER, Missouri — A 62-year-old Missouri man is facing multiple charges and could face federal charges following an incident involving an airplane being shot at on July 10, 2022.

The Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office reports Donald V. Bates Jr., of Kidder, Missouri was taken into custody following a search warrant.

Bates is currently being held at the Caldwell County jail on charges of attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault, armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon, and first-degree property damage.

According to court records, on July 10, in an attempt to frighten the pilot of a crop duster flying near his home, Bates admitted he walked outside of his home where the crop duster pilot could see him while he was piloting his aircraft.

Bates stated he raised both of his arms wide open while raising his middle finger toward the pilot. Bates also admitted he had a 12 gauge shotgun, visible in his right hand while confronting the pilot.

Bates believed the pilot was flying too low near his property and he just wanted him to stop. Bates claims he never aimed the shotgun toward the pilot and never had his finger on the trigger.

The pilot of the crop duster stated he had made a few rows through the field he was spraying when he observed Bates standing in front of his house with a gun in his right hand.

The pilot states he could see Bates on the right side of him as he flew overhead at 100 feet off the ground and states after seeing Bates with the gun he decided to go to a different farm a few miles away to avoid further conflict and was in fear of his life not knowing if Bates would shoot at him.

Court documents say the pilot flew the plane back to Lexington Municipal Airport, about 30 miles away, and stated once he landed his plane and following an inspection, found fuel leaking from the right wing through a bullet hole in the fuel tank on the underside of the right wing. The pilot then found another bullet hole in the nose cone.

The damage to the airplane is estimated at $12,000 with $25,000 in lost wages for being unable to fly due to the damage.

One witness stated he heard approximately 10-15 gunshots at the time of the incident.

The FBI is continuing a federal investigation into the incident and federal charges may be coming.

No bond has been set for Bates at this time.

MELROSE, Florida — Two people were killed after the pilot of a experimental gyroplane made an emergency landing near Gainesville, causing the aircraft to burst into flames.

The TangoGyro Tango2 crashed into a private field on Saturday during a test flight.

Area residents were shocked to learn about the tragic fiery crash.

Laurie Peltra said her granddaughter saw it go down.

“Yeah, she came up to me, and said, ‘A gyroplane just fell out of the sky,” she said.

Devastating video showed the plane on fire.

Shaken by the sight, Peltra said, she called police immediately.

“It was surreal, because you don’t expect something to fall out of the sky in the pasture next to your house,” she said.

Authorities hailed the victims as heroes. They said the pilot made a last-effort maneuver to avoid crashing into homes.

“In probably a last heroic moment, the person that was operating the gyroplane crashed in between, almost, two buildings — a small barn-type building and a house,” said Clay County Sheriff Michelle Cook. “He was probably within 100 feet of either.”

Peltra said she had never seen this plane before, but there are frequent flyers in the area.

Now, she said, she is just praying for everyone involved.

“From the minute we saw it happen, we’ve been praying for peace and everything for the family, and we are so sorry that this happened to them,” she said.

The crash remains under investigation. As of Sunday evening, authorities have not identified the victims.

MARSTON MILLS — A small airplane crashed into trees and underbrush off the runway at Cape Cod Airfield on Wednesday afternoon, according to a press release from the Centerville-Osterville-Marstons Mills fire department.

There was one minor injury for one of the two occupants, Morrison said.

The single-engine airplane was found by firefighters at the end of Runway 23, between the airfield and Race Lane, according to the release.

The occupants got themselves out of the plane on their own. They were walking around at the site of the crash. Both were checked for injuries. Both declined to go to the hospital, the fire department said in the release.

After the crash, the plane was pulled out of the woods and is currently in a hangar, Morrison said.

There was no damage to the runway, he said.

The crash is under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board, Morrison said.

There was no environmental damage, and some minor damage to the trees.

The airfield is located at 1000 Race Lane.
