On July 23, 2021, at 0745 central daylight time, a Beech 35-A33 airplane, N5ML, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near the Mineral Wells Regional Airport (MWL), Mineral Wells, Texas. The pilot and passenger sustained minor injuries. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight.

The pilot and passenger reported that the purpose of the flight was to fill the airplane with fuel for an upcoming flight. After a normal takeoff the airplane was enroute to their destination when they encountered low clouds. The pilot diverted to MWL, and he avoided the clouds as he descended toward the airport. He entered a downwind for runway 13 and reduced the engine to a low power setting. After turning final the pilot attempted to add power, however, the engine did not respond. He manipulated the throttle a second time, but to no avail. The pilot initiated a landing to a nearby field. The airplane touched down hard when the nose gear collapsed, and the airplane came to rest. Consequently, the airplane’s right wing sustained substantial damage.

The airplane was recovered to a secure location for further examination.

Analysis

The pilot of the multiengine airplane reported that, while on final approach to land, the airplane encountered some turbulence and he landed hard short of the runway. The left main landing gear tire was blown when it contacted the runway asphalt. The airplane subsequently veered to the left and departed the left side of the runway onto the desert terrain. The landing gear collapsed, and the forward fuselage and windscreen center support structure were substantially damaged. The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.

Probable Cause and Findings

The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident to be:
The pilot’s unstable approach to land in turbulent conditions, which resulted in a hard landing short of the runway and subsequent loss of directional control and collision with terrain.

Findings

Aircraft Descent/approach/glide path - Not attained/maintained
Environmental issues (general) - Effect on equipment
Personnel issues Decision making/judgment - Pilot
Personnel issues Aircraft control - Pilot
Aircraft Directional control - Not attained/maintained

On July 23, 2021, about 1345 central daylight time, an experimental amateur-built RV-7 airplane, N977RV, sustained minor damage and a RV-8 airplane, N747JG, sustained substantial damage when they were involved in an accident at the Wittman Regional Airport (OSH), Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The pilots of both airplanes were not injured. The airplanes were operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight.

The pilots reported that they were landing at OSH in a four-airplane formation. They were cleared to land on the green dot on runway 27. The RV-8 was in the number two position and the RV-7 was right behind it in the number 4 position.

The pilot of the RV-8 reported that they touched down and shortly thereafter air traffic control informed them to turn right onto the grass. He started the turn when suddenly the RV-7 struck his airplane.

The pilot of the RV-7 reported that his airplane touched down and bounced. It settled back onto the runway and started to slow. As the tailwheel touched down, the RV-8 temporarily went out of view. When the RV-8 came back into view, it was turning in front of his airplane. He immediately applied the brakes and added right rudder, but his left wing impacted the RV-8’s rudder, aileron, and right wing which resulted in substantial damage.
