Jefferson City Fire Department

Jefferson City Fire Dept responded to an aircraft standby at Jefferson City Memorial Airport on the evening of Monday March 1, 2021.

Chief 5, E1, L1/Foam1 responded at 5:40pm to Memorial Airport for an aircraft that was approximately 25 miles out and experiencing radio and landing gear problems.

L1 crew manned Foam 1 and along with E1 and Chief 5 stood by on the apron of the airport awaiting the plane’s arrival.

Callaway County EMS also provided an ambulance for the standby.

The plane arrived doing a fly by of the tower for inspection of the landing gear.

Tower reported to the pilot that the landing gear was still partially in the cradled position.

After a few attempts to drop the landing gear had failed the pilot decided to land the plane as is on the runway.

Chief 5 called for Tanker 4 and E4 for extra water and personnel.

The pilot put the plane down on the east end of runway 12/30.

The plane skidded for approximately 150-200 ft and then came to a stop.

Foam 1 and E1 immediately responded to the area.

The plane was found upright, fully intact except for the landing gear and some minor scrapes/damage to the bottom of the plane and the propeller.

The pilot was the only passenger and was uninjured.

Tanker 4 and E4 were disregarded.

Chief 5 joined E1 and Foam 1 on the runway.

All personnel remained on scene for approximately 3 hours until the plane was towed off the runway.
