On November 23, 2021, about 1032, an experimental amateur-built Zenith Zodiac 601XL, N601KS, was destroyed when it was involved in an accident in Temecula, California. The pilot was fatally injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight.

A witness, who was located in the front yard of a residence, in a new housing development, about 3 miles southeast of French Valley Airport, reported hearing a loud bang, and then looking overhead to see an airplane flying in a northwest direction. The airplane then began to roll inverted while diving diagonally into the ground. After the airplane impacted, debris started falling from the sky almost directly above her.

Multiple other witnesses within the area of the housing development recounted similar observations of hearing a loud booming sound followed by observing an airplane dive toward the ground while debris fell from it.

The airplane came to rest nose down in a field, about 250 ft north of the housing development.

The airframe was compressed aft, such that the engine and firewall were in line with the trailing edge of the wings. Both wings sustained crush damage through to the aft spar, both fuel tanks had been breached, and the smell of fuel was present in the soil surrounding the site.

A 70-ft-long debris field consisting of fragments of canopy plexiglass material, shards of aluminum, and fragments of flight instruments, emanated from the main wreckage west. The pilots flight bag, a sun visor, and a fuel sump jar were located about 400 ft east of the main wreckage, and an iPad was located about halfway between.

Marshal Whatley (R) has been identified as the pilot killed when his small plane crashed in an open field just outside a Temecula residential neighborhood.

TEMECULA, California — Authorities say a local man was killed when a plane he was piloting crashed into an open field about six miles southeast of the French Valley Airport in Temecula, yesterday morning, Tuesday, November 23.

The field where the plane came to rest was barely 100 yards away from a nearby residential neighborhood; where area residents and curious onlookers were seen while officials worked at the scene.

Deputies from the Southwest Sheriff’s Station, Cal Fire – Riverside, and other emergency personnel were dispatched to an open field near the 32100 block of Everview Terrace around 10:30 a.m. after receiving reports of an aircraft emergency with a downed plane.

When deputies and other officials arrived, they found a single-engine Zodiac 601XL overturned on its roof and found that the pilot and sole occupant of the aircraft had already succumbed to his injuries and passed away.

The Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office today identified Marshal Whatley, 48, of Murrieta, as the pilot killed in the crash. A Coroner’s release indicated he was pronounced deceased at 10:47 a.m.

Officials from the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board were notified of the fatal crash and have since assumed the investigation.

No information about the plane’s flight plan was immediately available and the investigation into the cause of the crash is continuing.   No streets were directly impacted or closed as a result of the crash, according to Sheriff’s officials.

In a social media post this morning, Temecula Valley VFW Post 4089 wrote, “It’s with a heavy heart that we inform our brothers and sisters of Post 4089 that we lost one of our own.”

“Marshal Whatley was taken from us in a plane he was piloting yesterday morning that crashed,” TVVFW went on to say; adding, “He will be sorely missed by all of us.”

A meeting to be held at the VFW Post tonight will honor Marshal and “mourn … our loss of this former Marine, husband, father and friend.”

A Murrieta man died in a small plane crash in an open field in Temecula on Tuesday morning, November 23, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said.

The plane crashed at around 10:35 a.m. in a field near the 32000 block of Everview Terrace, Sgt. Brandi Swan said. When deputies arrived, they found the man – the sole occupant of the plane – dead inside of the aircraft, she said.

The pilot was identified as 48-year-old Marshal Whatley, according to the Riverside County Coroner’s Office.

There was no damage to property besides the plane itself, according to Swan

The plane was a Zenair CH 601 XL Zodiac, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board were investigating the crash.

It was not immediately known what led up to the crash.

The crash site is southeast of French Valley Airport.

On November 20, 2021, about 1656 Pacific standard time, an experimental amateur-built Glasair III N291KT, was destroyed when it was involved in an accident near San Bernardino, California. The pilot was fatally injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 91 personal flight.

The pilot was noticed missing on November 21, 2021, and a search for the airplane began. Subsequently, the airplane wreckage was located near the summit of San Bernardino Peak.

According to preliminary radar data, the airplane departed Camarillo Airport, Camarillo, California, on a cross-country flight. The last radar return indicated that the airplane’s altitude was about 9,300 ft msl on a heading of 095°, and the ground speed was 219 knots. The airplane impacted mountainous terrain on about the same heading and altitude.

Examination of the wreckage site revealed a disturbed area of rocks and trees where the airplane impacted the terrain. Fragments of the wings and fuselage were located in this area. The only portion of the airplane that was relatively intact was the tail section, which was also found with the main wreckage. All the flight control surfaces on the vertical stabilizer and horizontal stabilizers remained attached. Fragments of the airplane were scattered about 200 ft upslope from the main wreckage and about 100 ft below the site. The engine, which had sustained substantial impact damage during the accident sequence, had separated from the fuselage and was located about 100 ft upslope of the main wreckage. The propeller blades and hub had separated.

VFR weather conditions were reported over the region. No SIGMETs or convective SIGMETs were active for the area. Additionally, there were no NWS weather advisories current for the area.

A plane that went missing on November 20, was found to have crashed in the mountains east of Big Bear City with the pilot dying in the impact, authorities said.

The remains of the Glasair III were discovered about 40 miles east of Big Bear City in mountainous terrain on November 21, according to the National Transportation Safety Board and Ian Gregor, spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration. The pilot, the plane’s sole occupant, was the lone fatality in the crash, Gregor said.

The NTSB was investigating.

The San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office received the pilot’s remains on November 23, and was working on identifying the body, said Gloria Huerta, spokeswoman for the county Sheriff’s Department.

The single-engine plane crashed under unknown circumstances at an unknown time Saturday, the FAA said. The incident was characterized as “accidental” by the FAA.

It was neither immediately clear where the plane took off from nor where it was headed.

Both the San Bernardino County Fire Department and Sheriff’s Department assisted with the search and rescue effort on November 21.

The Sheriff’s Department’s search and rescue team hiked six hours to the crash site and the sheriff’s aviation unit hoisted down personnel with the NTSB, Fire Department and law enforcement, Huerta said. The Fire Department assisted by establishing and securing landing zones for all aircraft involved in the search, said Eric Sherwin, spokesman for the Fire Department.

On November 21, 2021, about 1920 mountain standard time, a Cessna T310R, N310JA, was destroyed when it was involved in an accident near Chadron, Nebraska. The private pilot and 2 passengers sustained fatal injuries. The personal flight was conducted under the provisions of Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91.

The airplane landed at the Chadron Municipal Airport (CDR), dropped off a passenger, and refueled. About 40 minutes later, the airplane departed from runway 30 at CDR in dark night, visual meteorological conditions. Airport security video showed that the airplane’s takeoff roll and liftoff were normal. Automated Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast (ADS-B) data showed the airplane climbed to about 200 ft, turned to the right, and descended into rising terrain.

The initial ground impact was about 3,347 ft MSL, on an approximate heading of 350°. The wreckage debris was dispersed over 600 ft from the initial ground impact point. A post-crash fire consumed most of the airplane. The distribution of the debris was consistent with a nearly wings level, nose down, high speed impact. Ground scars from the propeller blades of both engines were present and consistent with rotation at the time of impact.

Although most of the airplane wreckage was consumed by fire, examinations of the existing flight controls did not reveal any pre-impact anomalies. Both engines were examined and neither revealed any pre-impact anomalies. Fuel was present in each engine’s fuel distribution system. Testing of the fuel source at CDR revealed that the fuel was normal and had no contaminants. The damage to the propeller blade assemblies from both left and right engines were symmetrical, consistent with the engines producing similar power at the time of impact.

Maintenance logbooks were reviewed, and no outstanding discrepancies were found. The pilot’s logbooks were reviewed, and all qualifications, ratings, and certificates were up to date.

Killed in the crash were Dr. Matthew Bruner, 44, his oldest son, Noah Bruner, 21, and Sydnee Brester, 19 of Gering. Their names were released Tuesday by Dawes County Attorney Vance Haug.

Matthew Bruner was the chief medical officer at Regional West Medical Center, and on Tuesday, Gov. Pete Ricketts took note of his death. Speaking at an event in Scottsbluff, Ricketts said that Bruner had worked closely with the state on the response to COVID-19.

“It’s a loss felt all across the state,” Ricketts said, according to KNEB-AM.

An obstetrician and gynecologist, Bruner began practicing in Scottsbluff in 2009, joining the practice at The Women’s Center.

According to the Colorado company where Noah Bruner worked, the group was on its way back from the Green Bay Packers-Minnesota Vikings football game in Minneapolis.

They had dropped off James Bruner in Chadron and were enroute to Fort Collins, Colorado, when the crash occurred. James is a brother to Noah and son to Matthew Brunner.

Noah Bruner was a graduate of Scottsbluff High School and Chadron State College and worked as an operations assistant for Power 2 Play Sports in Windsor, Colorado.
