TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Six parts from a U.S. military aircraft were found to have fallen to the ground in Yamato, Kanagawa Prefecture on Wednesday, one of which hit a passenger car, but no injuries were reported, U.S. military officials said.
The parts, including a piece 2.2 meters long and 1 meter wide, fell from an EA-6B electronic warfare aircraft from the carrier George Washington, based at the U.S. Navy's Yokosuka base in Kanagawa, before it landed at Atsugi base following a drill, according to the Navy.
The Navy said the parts were found north of Atsugi around 2 p.m.
Yamato Mayor Satoru Oki said, "I urge the Navy to refrain from flying this type of jet until investigation of the cause has been made and safety assurances given."
The U.S. naval forces commander in Japan said it is currently investigating the matter.
