A Republic RC-3 Seabee aircraft made an emergency landing on the Parks Highway near Talkeetna on Sunday evening, according to Alaska State Troopers.

The pilot was the only person in the plane and wasn’t hurt, according to a troopers spokesperson.

Troopers in an online dispatch said they got a call around 6:20 p.m. about a plane that landed on the highway near Mile 95. Troopers arrived to find the plane in the ditch on the north side of the highway.

The pilot said they lost power and had to make an emergency landing, troopers said. The plane struck an overhead power line on the way down.

Responders from Talkeetna Fire Department secured the downed lines and the plane was moved out of the way. Traffic was not blocked during the incident.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the incident, according to the agency’s Alaska chief, Clint Johnson.

The Seabee is an amphibious aircraft first produced during World War II and described as a “chubby little seaplane” tough enough to operate from both dirt air strips and rough water by Air and Space Magazine.

There aren’t many in Alaska, Johnson said.

On July 30, 2021, about 1423 Pacific daylight time, a Grumman G-164B airplane, N3629F, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Tracy, California. The pilot was not injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 137 aerial application flight.

The pilot reported that he was just beginning his 8th pass over a hay field that was located beneath high-tension power lines. He planned to repeat his previous passes by flying south below the high-tension power lines, which ran diagonally across the field (northeast to southwest) and the flight path. When the pilot was about midfield, he experienced a total loss of engine power accompanied by a vibration. The pilot stated that his airspeed was about 130 mph at the time of the power loss, but it decayed rapidly. He was unable to enter a climb due to the power lines located overhead. The pilot flew about 10-15 ft above ground level under another set of power lines at the south end of the field to an adjacent field. He then began a shallow right tun to orient the airplane parallel to a series of raised dirt beds. However, during the turn the airplane contacted the ground and several trees. Photographs showed substantial damage to the fuselage and wings.

The wreckage was retained for further examination.

Injuries: 1 None
Flight Conducted Under: Part 91: General aviation - Personal

On July 31, 2021, about 1007, a Cessna 182E, N3186Y, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Eugene, Oregon. The pilot was not injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight.

The pilot stated that he landed the airplane on the main landing gear, and then allowed the nose wheel to settle onto the runway. As soon as it did, the airplane veered to the right and then left. He applied corrective rudder control inputs, and the airplane then veered more violently to the left, until it was perpendicular to the runway centerline. The right wing then dropped, and the wingtip struck the ground as the airplane came to rest.

The pilot stated that the airplane swerved aggressively while he landed at another airport earlier in the day, however strong gusting winds were present at that time, and he assumed that was the reason for the diversion.

The airplane was equipped with a modified nosewheel assembly, installed in accordance with Airglas Inc. supplemental type certificate SA02069AK. The installation called for the replacement of the original nose gear fork assembly, with one designed for a Piper PA32, which allowed for a larger 8.50-6 tire. The STC resulted in a 4-inch increase in nose gear height.

The STC’s flight manual supplement stated the following regarding in-flight procedures:

“Landing: The Nose Fork and 8.50-6 tire increases the length of the nose gear by approximately 4". Pilots should ensure that all landings are accomplished in a nose high attitude similar to the soft field approach attitude.

CAUTION

During landing there is an increased possibility of wheelbarrowing or porpoising during landing. Pilots should ensure that all landings are accomplished in a nose high attitude similar to the soft field approach attitude.”

On July 30, 2021, about 1440 central daylight time, a HpH, Spol. S.R.O Glasflügel 304S experimental glider, N304AB, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Briggs, Texas. The pilot was seriously injured. The glider was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight.

According to the aerotow pilot, shortly after takeoff and while the tow plane was about 300 ft above the runway, the glider unexpectedly released from the tow rope. The glider then entered a left turn and landed in what appeared to be a wings level attitude. The tail boom and empennage separated during the landing. The tow rope appeared to be undamaged.

An examination of the glider revealed that the vertical elevator control rod, part no. 304S-46-12, had fractured about 0.75 inch above the lower clevis and a portion of the fractured control rod contained corrosion deposits. Additionally, the upper portion of the vertical elevator control rod exhibited a significant hole due to corrosion. The vertical elevator control rod was extracted from the vertical stabilizer and sent to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) Materials Laboratory for further examination.

According to the maintenance logbook, on July 6, 2021, the glider was inspected and found to be in an airworthy condition. The aviation mechanic with inspector authorization noted in the corresponding logbook entry that he had “checked controls” and that the condition inspection had been completed in accordance with Federal Aviation Regulations Part 43, Appendix D.

RANDOLPH TOWNSHIP (WKOW) -- The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office responded to a helicopter crash in Randolph township that left one person injured Saturday morning.

Officials were called about a helicopter that had crashed in a cornfield around 10:15 a.m. after hitting power lines.

Dodge County Sheriff’s Office, Friesland Fire Department, Cambria Fire Department, Randolph EMS, Randolph Fire Department, Beaver Dam Paramedics, UW Hospitals Med-Flight, Alliant Energy, and ATC assisted the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office at the incident.

Investigators said the helicopter was piloted by one person who attempted to fly under high power lines while crop dusting a field but hit the lines and went down a short distance away.

According to the sheriff's office, first responders were able to get the pilot out of the helicopter, who was treated by Randolph EMA and Beaver Dam Paramedics.

Deputies reported the pilot was later taken to a hospital by medical helicopter with non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash remains under investigation by the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office and Federal Aviation Administration.

Investigation Docket - National Transportation Safety Board:

Location: Oshkosh, Wisconsin
Accident Number: CEN21LA344
Date and Time: July 30, 2021, 10:00 Local
Registration: N725DW
Aircraft: WEISS DENIS SPARROW II
Aircraft Damage: Substantial
Defining Event: Abnormal runway contact
Injuries: 2 Minor
Flight Conducted Under: Part 91: General aviation - Personal

Analysis

The pilot reported that during landing on a grass runway, the airplane first bounced about 5 ft high, then bounced a few more times as it neared the end of the runway. The pilot added that he did not have enough remaining runway to complete a go-around, so he applied the brakes, but they did not work. The airplane continued off the end of the runway and impacted a small ditch and sustained substantial damage to the fuselage and engine mount. A post-accident examination of the brake system revealed no mechanical malfunctions or anomalies that would have precluded normal operation.

Probable Cause and Findings

The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident to be:
The pilot’s improper landing flare which resulted in a bounced landing, a loss of control, and runway excursion.

Findings

Aircraft Airspeed - Not attained/maintained
Aircraft Descent rate - Not attained/maintained
Personnel issues Aircraft control - Pilot
