Passenger on Southwest Flight to Texas Used Phone In-Flight

EL PASO, TX - A Southwest flight originating in Phoenix had police waiting when it landed in El Paso Monday night, after a passenger refused to comply with commands from airline employees.

The passenger was doing something flight attendants tell all passengers not to do -- using his cell phone while in-flight. In this case, things went a little too far.

Initial reports indicate that passenger on Southwest Flight 1833 took out his cell phone and used it to make a call while the plane was mid-air, and refused to turn it off. Details are unclear, but an altercation possibly ensued between that man and either other passengers or the flight crew.

The FAA does not allow in-flight cell phone use because it could interfere with communications between the pilot and the ground, and possibly interfere with functions on the plane.

When the plane landed, he was detained by El Paso Police. Detectives are currently interviewing witnesses.

No names are available.
