It’s no surprise for James Simpson to find odds and ends around the perimeter of his backyard.

Old tires and TVs have, in the past, found their way to the sprawling, 100-acre Nassagaweya property, and every spring Simpson and his wife make a trip to Halton’s waste management site to drop off their finds.

But what Simpson found a couple of weeks ago sparked his interest.

He stumbled upon two large pieces of what appear to be an airplane in the middle of his property.

“We see airplanes all the time flying over our property, big and little ones,” said the former pilot and airplane owner.

He said with the nearby Burlington Airpark and the landing strips some neighbouring farmers have built on their properties, air traffic in the area is nothing new.

Initially, Simpson discovered a fiberglass piece that’s a couple of feet wide and long. He suspects the piece fits underneath the plane’s engine.

A couple of days later he found a 19-inch wide by 11-foot long piece that appears to have fallen off the bottom of the plane.

He believes the pieces came from a home built plane. Build your own aircraft kits are readily available for flying enthusiasts.

He contacted Halton police to enquire about any recent airplane crashes, missing pilot or missing airplane reports.

“I’m not sure if a plane could still fly without these pieces,” he said, adding that the police said there weren’t any airplane incidents reported.

Asked if the parts could have been placed on his Guelph Line and No. 15 Sideroad property, rather than have fallen from the sky, he said the nearest road is 130 metres from his property.

“The back of the house is inaccessible, unless you drive there,” he said. Simpson is hoping the owner of the plane will claim his or her missing parts.

“There is some damage, but it still may be of some use.”
