Opinion: Commercial pilots - Manual control underused.

I read the article about how much airline pilots rely on computer controls and navigation and was surprised and appalled!

I only have a private pilot's license, but I do know you are taught the basics of flight and aerodynamics when you're just in ground school.

I can't believe these guys are complaining because they don't get enough manual control time to remember their long-lost skills.

The airline should ensure that. Even if they don't, the pilots could take it upon their own hectic schedules to go rent a little Cessna at a local airport and reacquaint themselves with basic knowledge of flight.

Any pilot should know that you do not try to pull out of a stall by yanking up on the yoke. A stall is not due to engine failure. It is due to the air flow under the wings not being strong enough to maintain the plane's elevation.

A pilot's mind in that situation is telling them to pull the nose of the plane up, but that is exactly the wrong thing to do. You actually need to push the yoke down, and then you can level off when you regain airspeed.
