RICE COUNTY, Minn. - A 78-year-old man survived a paraglider crash after his plane went down in a Rice County, Minnesota soybean field.

John Edward Goodoien put his paraglider down in a bean field off Elmore Avenue, a mile south of Highway 189, around 7:20 p.m. Monday. A deputy dispatched to the area of the crash found the light body aircraft, but saw no signs of the pilot.

A passerby stopped and said he saw the plane in the field and the pilot walking toward it. He gave Goodoien a ride to his home in Rice County.

When Goodoien spoke to the deputy at his home, he said the paraglider had been in the air for about an hour before he lost power. He estimated the crash happened around 7:20 p.m.

Goodoien was later taken to the hospital.

The Rice County sheriff’s office and the FAA are investigating the crash.
