California: Redding Air Show To Go On With No Changes

REDDING, Calif. -- In light of the two fatal crashes this weekend, KRCR spoke to officials in charge of the Redding Air Show to see exactly what they are doing to make sure spectators are safe.

Airshow chairman, Bill Wagner says they have several precautions in place to ensure the safety of the approximately 30,000 people they expect to attend this weekend’s show.

All of the planes must stay at least 1500 feet from the crowd and according to the Federal Aviation Administration; the maneuvers pilots perform cannot fly in the direction of spectators.

Wagner also says all the pilots are certified by the FAA and their routines are well rehearsed and have been approved by FAA officials.

“This is no different than Nascar, which is far more dangerous,” says Wagner.

“The air show is good family oriented community service event that has generated more than $936,000 dollars for area charities.”

Officials with the air show will also have fencing up to keep spectators out of certain areas.

And if anything does go wrong, first responders who have been preparing for five months will be on the scene.

There is also a cable on the runway, which extends it from 7,000 feet to 10,000 which is a safety precaution required by military guidelines.

Tickets are still available and are on sale all week for $10 and $16 at the gate.

Children under 11-years old get in for free.

You can buy your tickets at any Raley’s Supermarket in Redding, Chico, or Red Bluff.
