3rd Marine Aircraft Wing halts training flights; victims named. Bell AH-1W Super Cobra. Camp Pendleton in Southern California.

Galesburg native Jeffrey Carl Bland was one of two U.S. Marines killed in a helicopter crash Monday during a training exercise at Camp Pendleton in Southern California. Bland, a 1992 graduate of Galesburg High School, was 37 years old. He is survived by his wife, Heather Cook Bland, and their 7-month-old daughter Aliana. His parents, Janet and Carl Bland, reside in Galesburg.

Nearly all training flights for the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing are canceled until Thursday, according to the unit commander, who made the announcement one day after a deadly helicopter crash at Camp Pendleton, Calif. That came shortly before wing officials identified the pilots killed in Monday’s crash as Capt. Jeffrey Bland and 1st Lt. Thomas Heitmann, both assigned to Marine Light Attack Training Squadron 303 at Camp Pendleton.

GALESBURG —The Register-Mail has confirmed Galesburg native Jeffrey Carl Bland was one of two U.S. Marines killed in a helicopter crash Monday during a training exercise at Camp Pendleton in Southern California.

Bland, a 1992 graduate of Galesburg High School, was 37 years old. He is survived by his wife, Heather Cook Bland, and their 7-month-old daughter Aliana. His parents, Janet and Carl Bland, reside in Galesburg.

An investigation is under way into the cause of the helicopter crash, which sparked a brush fire that burned 120 acres, according to a base statement.

The twin-engine, two-seat AH-1W Cobra attack helicopter belonging to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing crashed in the southeast corner of the base near the community of Fallbrook.
