Closure of Filton airfield would "rip heart out of wonderful industry". (UK)

THANK you for publishing the many letters on the future of Filton Airfield.

Most of them showing dismay at the threatened airfield closure with subsequent harm to the local economy.

I would single out Councillor Ian Boulton for his views (Don't sell the family silver August 25). The deep and thoughtful full page article stating the views of Sir George White (Sept 8) just about summed up what could befall us. Closing the airfield would be like ripping the heart out of the wonderful industry started by his great grandfather prior to the 1914-18 war.

Remember how Dr Beeching closed a host of rail routes and ripped out the lines.

How ironic that currently strong pressure groups are advocating the rebuilding of former valuable rail routes. Such is progress!

To the 'joker' who advised that all people who liked aircraft should move to Lulsgate, what thousands of us?

I believe local residents up there successfully scuppered suggestion of a new housing estate in their area anyway.
