EGLIN AFB, Fla. (WALA) - Friday, an new era of U.S. military fighter jets began at Eglin Airforce Base. The F-35 aircraft will one day replace the F-16.

"To meet this point here in 2011, it's taken some time to get there. But we're just at the beginning stages to start full training here in the near future," said Colonel Andrew Toth, 33rd Fighter Wing Commander.

The event was an official welcoming party for the aircraft, which has been in planning and development for years. However, officials said the F-35 is still a couple of months away from being officially operational.
