Hailey airport to get update from FAA on September 13th. Friedman Memorial Airport (KSUN), Idaho.

HAILEY, ID (KMVT) Earlier this week the Federal Aviation Administration put the brakes on the proposal to move Friedman Memorial Airport in Hailey. That's because the airport has run out of room to expand at its current site so larger airplanes can land there. The airport manager says the FAA wants the community to find a more economical solution than building a new airport.

Rick Baird, Manager of Friedman Memorial Airport, says, "They've suspended the Envinronmental Impact Statement to allow the community, based on things that we know, how much the airport would cost and some of the wildlife issues. Are there other alternatives or are there other options that we should be exploring?"

Baird says the airport board will talk to the FAA on September 13th. He says advances in technology during the last five years may mean there are new ways to deal with the problems they're still facing at their current location.

Baird says, "And so what is plausible or possible now, may not have been plausible or possible back in 2006 when they basically started down this road."

Baird says the FAA stopping the draft environmental impact statement now is a great opportunity for local residents to take a fresh look at solving the problems at Friedman Memorial. He hopes the meeting with the FAA will begin a process that the City of Hailey and Blaine County will take that public input, and then see if they can begin moving ahead support by the FAA.
