Risks and rewards of aerobatics: Accidents, thrills bind air show circuit performers

If anyone would have had a reason not to perform in air shows, it would be Kyle and Amanda Franklin.

The couple both lost their famous flying fathers, Jimmy Franklin and Bobby Younkin, in a mid-air collision on July 10, 2005, about the time the Franklins got married.

"Losing our fathers, we both knew the risks involved. Amanda and I had long conversations about the risks. It's a risk we accept to take," Kyle said. "The industry itself, all the air show performers, we are accustomed to this type of thing. We all know and understand the risks involved. We accept them."

But chance can be fickle.
