A Guyana aviation official says the country is upgrading landing systems to help avoid the kind of crash that just occurred in the South American country.
Civil Aviation Director Zulfikar Mohamed says the upgrades include an instrument landing system. That will give pilots a more precise reading of their angle of descent and position. Pilots have complained existing systems are not as good for landing in bad weather.
Mohamed says the new system will be ready soon. It was not in use Saturday when a Caribbean Airlines Boeing 737 slid off the end of a runway with 162 people on board. The crash injured about 30 people but no one died.
U.S. investigators are heading to the country Sunday to try to determine the cause.
