Experimental plane crashes on first flight: Pilot dies in crash in northeast Illinois. Aurora Municipal Airport (KARR), Chicago/Aurora, Illinois.

AURORA, Ill. — Authorities say the pilot of a small experimental plane is dead after his aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff in northeast Illinois.

Kane County Sheriff's Office spokesman Patrick Gengler says authorities responded to the reported crash before 8 a.m. on Sunday.

A preliminary investigation shows the small plane had taken off from Aurora Airport when it lost altitude and crashed into a cornfield nearby.

The pilot was identified as 73-year-old Aurora resident John Morrison. Authorities say he is an experienced pilot in flying experimental planes. Gengler says it was the first flight for the plane.

The cause of the crash is unknown.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the crash.
