Piper PA-38-112 Tomahawk, Ravenair Aircraft Ltd, G-RVRF: Newlands Avenue Peel Green, Eccles, Manchester M30 7GJ

The aircraft suffered an engine stoppage on takeoff at approximately 200 ft, stalled, rolled more than 60º to the left, crashed into houses and caught fire. Both occupants survived the impact and fire but the pilot succumbed to his injuries later in hospital. The most likely cause of the engine stoppage was stiffness of the fuel selector valve causing it to be in an intermediate position, reducing fuel flow to a level too low to sustain continuous engine operation.

A man has died after suffering severe burns when a light aircraft crashed into houses on Friday.

The 59-year-old man passed away as a result of his injuries at Wythenshawe Hospital. A 21-year-old man who was also in the plane is still in a critical condition.

Neighbours battled to save the two men, who have not been named, after their single-engine Tomahawk plane crashed into houses on Newlands Avenue, Peel Green on Friday morning.

Witnesses told how people used buckets of water and a hosepipe to try to beat back flames from the plane's wreckage. Both men were taken to hospital following the crash around 11am suffering severe burns.

It is thought the plane, owned by aviation company Ravenair, had taken off from nearby City Airport just minutes before getting into difficulties. It is understood a mayday call was made to the airport, with witnesses in nearby flats on Argosy Drive reporting the plane's engine making a 'spluttering' noise before cutting out.

After hitting the roof of one house the plane struck the wall of the adjacent property before falling to the ground between them.

Rushing to the pilot and passenger's aid, witnesses reported a huge plume of black smoke before the fuselage caught fire.

The two houses hit by the plane suffered structural damage to walls and roofs but the occupants were uninjured.

They have had to find temporary accommodation while major structural work is carried out to make their houses safe while people living in other houses on the streets have been able to return. Air accident investigators worked throughout yesterday to examine the scene of the crash and pinpoint parts of the wreckage to determine the cause of the crash. A large crane was also brought in to begin removing parts of the plane.
