Editorial: Military museum at Naples Municipal Airport (KAPF), Naples, Florida.

A military museum at Naples Municipal Airport?

Great idea.

It’s even a natural given the airport got its start as a World War II pilot training center.

Now plans call for a regional startup museum effort to be based at the commercial air terminal off North Road on the south end of the airport property.

With all the military veterans in our area, this ought to be popular and attract visitors to a little-used part of the airport. It even has the support of the owner of our areas’ existing treasure trove of military artifacts, the private Homer Helter’s Antique and Military Mall on Shirley Street off Pine Ridge Road in North Naples.

With the right planning and execution, who knows? The airport museum could grow into a complementary member of our array of museums large and small for art, local history, child’s play and even the Holocaust.

The secret to those and other museums elsewhere is their ability to keep history alive. That is what makes museums so educational and exciting.

Just think of the military artifacts that our area veterans might share with the museum. Thank goodness the museum is inviting queries by phone, 941-661-8688; or email (cq) museummiltry1@embarqmail.com; the web site is museum-mm.org.

Some awesome items might come forth.
