Arts Jury Reviewing Airport Submissions: The local artists' exhibit at the Barnstable Municipal Airport is scheduled for May

An arts jury of seven Cape Codders has begun reviewing the submissions of 115 local artists who would like to have their work exhibited at Barnstable Municipal Airport. The jury plans to select art for the next year and have the first rotating round on display by May 18 when the new airport will be dedicated officially.

During its preliminary review, the jury will examine all submissions for professionalism and artist experience, and whether the applicants' medium, style and content are appropriate for display in the terminal.

According to Kevin Howard, executive director of the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod, a group of not more than 25 finalists will be selected and asked to submit works for display in specific locations inside and outside the terminal.

The Barnstable Municipal Airport Commission proposed to showcase the work of local artists to add to the "sense of place" in the new 35,000 sq. ft. air terminal.

The jury includes Howard; Michael Giaquinto, exhibitions curator at the Cape Cod Museum of Art; local artists Suzanne Packer-McGarr and Debbie Forman; Chatham architect John R. DaSilva, airport commission Vice Chairman Donald Megathlin and Airport Manager Roland "Bud" Breault.

A task force of local art leaders has been working for more than a year to write the rules and guide the process for selecting the art and identifying exhibit locations.

Displays are expected to change about every six months. Exhibited works will be insured by the Town of Barnstable and labeled with artist contact information so prospective buyers may contact them for further information.

The Town of Barnstable has established a gift account to receive financial donations to support the airport art program. Interested donors should inquire by calling the airport's administrative office at 508 775-2020.
