Spearfish Taxiway: Black Hills Airport-Clyde Ice Field (KSPF), South Dakota.

Spearfish's airport will build a full-length taxiway that runs parallel to the runway.

Black Hills Airport/Clyde Ice Field has received $3.15 million Federal Aviation Administration grant for the construction. The current taxiway stretches a little more than a third the length of the runway. That forces airplanes taking off or landing to use the runway for taxiing, which ties up the runway for aircraft
trying to land.

Officials say it's both an inconvenience and a safety hazard. Lawrence County will be expected to pay 2 percent of the project's total cost, and the state will chip in 3 percent. The first phase of the project should be finished by the end of October, but the bulk of the work will be completed in 2012.
