Fighter Jets Guarding Obama Intercept Planes Over Santa Cruz, California.

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- When the President of the United States is swooping through the air on Air Force 1, the skies are suddenly not as friendly.

Several Santa Cruz residents became alarmed when they saw military fighter jets flying over the Santa Cruz mountains on Monday.

Jet spotters said they watched F-15C fighter jets intercept four small private planes and escort them through the sky.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command confirmed to Action News that their military jets intercepted four private planes that happened to be flying over San Jose and Santa Cruz late Monday morning.

The jets were activated to protect U.S. President Barack Obama as he was landing and leaving from Moffett Federal Airfield in Mountain View.

Obama flew to Mountain View to speak at a town hall style meeting hosted by the professional networking website Linkedin.

The private pilots, one which included a pilot who took off from Watsonville Municipal Airport, were likely startled by their unexpected military chauffeur.
