Pilot involved in plane crash released from hospital. Tandem Rocket, N29RT. Le Mars Municipal Airport (KLRJ), Iowa.

LE MARS, Iowa -- Authorities say a pilot who crashed Saturday west of Le Mars Municipal Airport was treated at and released from a local hospital.

Le Mars Fire Chief David Schipper said Monday that Robert Thompkins, 42, of Le Mars, is going to be fine.

The experimental plane Thompkins was flying encountered trouble shortly after takeoff and crashed about 7 p.m. in a cornfield as he was attempting to return to the airport.

Thompkins was treated at the scene and taken by ambulance to Floyd Valley Hospital.

The Federal Aviation Administration was at the crash site Monday interviewing witnesses and examining the wreckage. The plane is owned by Tom Ortmann, of Le Mars.

Schipper said a mechanical problem may have occurred, but that the incident remains under investigation.
