THE wheels are in motion for a Mount Isa-based fixed wing flight school.

Already an application has been made to register a school and there are plans to look into building a hanger.

Work began on establishing a flight school following the response the upcoming Fly Mount Isa weekend next month, pilot Andrew Hurst said.

Mr Hurst decided to put the feelers out for interest in flying and already has about 60 people registered for the workshops which allow anyone the chance to learn more about flying.

He said he knew the workshop hosted by Free Fly Caloundra would be popular but not spark so much interest.

"I've had inquiries from people in Birdsville, Julia Creek and Avon Downs in the Territory who are taking part and have indicated that if there was a flight school here they would learn to fly," he said.

"A lot of these guys can't just take three weeks off work to go to the coast to get their recreational flying license because they can't leave their stations."

Mr Hurst said the flight school could be established as early as next year.

Meanwhile, just six places remain for the Fly Mount Isa workshop but Mr Hurst said if people missed out this time they should still register their interest for the next session.

The Fly Mount Isa weekend is on from October 1 to 3.

There is an information session on flying at 6pm on October 2 followed by a barbecue raising funds for the Ronald McDonald House.
