Injured fisherman waits 17 hours for helicopter rescue

ROCK HOUSE CREEK, N.C. – An injured fisherman was rescued in the Rock House Creek and Buffalo Cove areas this weekend.

According to Caldwell County officials, a fishing buddy located 60-year-old Dale Patrick Sullivan around 9:30 p.m. Saturday, but was unable to move him.

Paul Bucannon, the Watauga County Assistant Fire Marshal, says that Sullivan broke his leg and crews found it too treacherous an area to carry him out on foot.

Caldwell and Watauga County emergency crews waited for the National Guard rescue helicopter to assist in the effort Sunday afternoon.

According to Watauga dispatch, the rescue helicopter was able to safely rescue the man around 2:45 p.m. Sunday, nearly 17 hours after he was found.

He was reported missing by his family Saturday night. Sullivan was camping with his wife at their fishing cabin. He left around 7a.m. Saturday to go fishing; he said he’d be back around 2 p.m.

When he didn’t return, family members began searching for him and then reported him missing to Watauga County officials.

Sullivan is currently being treated at Watauga Medical Center.
