Taipei, Sept. 5 (CNA) Taiwan-based Mandarin Airlines has been allowing its maintenance department staff to work overtime illegally, the third time this year that the carrier has been reported over the issue, Taipei City government's Department of Labor officials of said Monday.

Huang Wen-chung, vice director of the department's Labor Standards Inspection Office, led three inspectors to the company's headquarters last week following a tip-off by an anonymous crew member.

Huang said that according to the department's attendance records and overtime application forms, Mandarin Airlines extended employees' work hours without the consent of the labor union.

Their total daily working hours plus overtime exceeded 12 hours, and the overtime remuneration was not paid accordingly as required by the Labor Standards Act.

Local media cited an airline official as saying that the company had revised maintenance crew shifts and had implemented controls on their working hours to avoid violating the labor act.

Chen Yeh-hsin, the commissioner of the Taipei City government's Department of Labor, pointed out, however, that the department had received reports in January and again June regarding the issue.

Since this is the company's third violation this year, the airline could face fines of between NT$20,000 (US$689) and NT$300,000.
