Air India looks to old hands to pilot revival. Former executive directors being reappointed

Mumbai, Sept.5:

With new Chairman and Managing Director (CMD), Mr Rohit Nandan looking to increase Air India's efficiency, the airline is now looking to re-hire the Executive Directors who left the airline during the former CMD, Mr Arvind Jadhav's time.

The move is aimed at reducing the work pressure on the present set of Executive Directors. “The management hopes that by reducing the multi-tasking burden, work efficiency would increase, which the airline desperately needs,” a senior Air India official told Business Line.

The airline had 43 Executive Directors in 2007 before Mr Jadhav took over. The number was subsequently trimmed down to 22. “The new CMD has already reinstated the Executive Directors for Customer Services and Related Business,” said an airline official.

Mr Anoop Srivastava was re-appointed Executive Director – Customer Services while Mr Amol Sharma was re-appointed Executive Director – Related Business last week. Mr S Venkat, Executive Director – Finance was also promoted to the airline's board as Director (Finance).

“Mr Nandan wants to use the expertise of those who were involved with the airline during its heyday. The move shows he is sensitive towards employees concerns and is serious about reviving the airline,” said the airline official.

Air India, which has been reeling under heavy debt, struggled to pay wages to its 40,000 employees since April. However, the new chairman paid the outstanding wages in two tranches to the workers whose salaries were held back.
