Chemung County IDA gets grant for Sikorsky project

Empire State Development has awarded the Chemung County Industrial Development Agency a grant of $800,000 to assist Sikorsky Aircraft Corp.'s expansion project at the former 120,000 square-foot Wings of Eagles Discovery Center in Big Flats.

Sikorsky, which already operates a Black Hawk helicopter finishing facility on Kahler Road in Big Flats, had previously announced plans to redevelop the former museum into its customer delivery center, administrative and engineering offices and additional manufacturing space for its Fire Scout and reconnaissance aircraft projects.

The $12.7 million project will retain 591 existing jobs and has already created 196 new jobs. Although the company has recently laid off about 380 workers, additional job creation is expected through 2016.
