Qantas To Use Larger Aircraft To Minimize Strike Impact

SYDNEY -(Dow Jones)- Qantas Airways Ltd. said Thursday it will use larger aircraft and consolidate services to minimize disruptions from next week's planned strike by the Transport Workers Union.

The Transport Workers Union Wednesday advised Qantas that up to 3,800 baggage handlers, ground staff, catering workers and other employees plan to strike for four hours Tuesday.

"The TWU is intent on causing disruptions to Qantas passengers and we are doing everything we possibly can to reduce the delays and cancellations," Qantas group executive Olivia Wirth said.

The workers said they would impose administrative bans that could affect flights for 48 hours, Qantas said. Those bans include refusing to do paperwork or performing certain duties, according to the TWU website.

The union said it's seeking clarity about pay, conditions and job security.

In July, Qantas said it would cut 1,500 jobs worldwide due to high oil prices and "changing economic conditions."
