    Looking at a topographic map of the area, it appears that the airplane turned into the first valley into the ridge on the pilot's left after takeoff. The second valley is less steep and leads to a lower saddle.

    Having said that, kudos to the pilot for going for a crash-landing, rather than attempting a 180 degrees turn which may well have turned into a fatal stall/spin.
