Reno-Stead Airport (KRTS) celebrates 75 years

Formerly an Air Force Base, the Reno-Stead Airport welcomed back many of its former tenants on Saturday for a special event.

A celebration kicked off Saturday morning at the Reno-Stead Airport that started with a Ruck March in honor of its military history.

During the Cold War, the airport served as a survival training school. Participants in this weekend's 10K Walk-Run course carried up to 40 pounds of non-perishable food items on their backs to benefit the Food Bank of Northern Nevada and the Veterans Guest House.

It was a special day for veterans like Gene Charles and Dan Fulton, who still remember their time at Stead Air Force Base decades ago.

"We came in April of 1952. That's what started this as our base, our home base," says Charles.

"This was my home for years and my friends were here, too," says Fulton.

Charles and Fulton had served as survival instructors. The base was closed in 1966.

"It's still dear to everybody's heart that was around," says Charles.
