All Nippon Airways crews land iPads for in-flight efficiency drive

All Nippon Airways Co., Japan's largest carrier by passenger numbers, is to equip all flight and cabin staff with Apple Inc. iPad computers, as part of a push to improve service standards and make cost efficiencies, the ANA Group said August 28.

The devices will carry passenger and cargo loading information to help reduce fuel burn, and will bring data such as weather observations into the cockpit in real-time, the company said.

"They will enable flight crew to choose the route and altitude with the least turbulence, and to help ensure operations run on-time," the company said in a statement.

ANA said it will begin redesigning its crew manuals as computer files, and from September will put the iPads on trial with 300 staff. It flight and cabin crew number about 2,500.

But the company notes certain in-flight rules restrict the use of transmitters such as cellphones and Wifi-equipped computers. ANA says for now some iPad functions will remain inactive after takeoff.
