Airport emergency called for Delta flight

Emergency procedures were put into place early Saturday afternoon at Owen Roberts International Airport after an inbound plane reported trouble.

The Delta flight, an MD 88, landed safely before 1.30pm Saturday with all 152 passengers and crew unhurt. According to Cayman Islands Fire Service crews there was a reported smell of smoke in the aircraft cabin, which prompted the emergency procedures. When the craft landed, all passengers and crew were evacuated safely.

What, if anything, was wrong with the plane could not immediately be determined. The official report was that the plane had smoke in the cabin area.

The Cayman Islands Airports Authority said the runway at Owen Roberts re-opened by 1.45pm and all airport operations were normal.

There were some delays expected for customers on the outbound Delta flight to Atlanta, scheduled for later Saturday afternoon.
