Airbus trails Boeing in orders, deliveries

The Boeing Co. delivered more jets in the first three months of 2012 than its European rival, Airbus.

Airbus reported Friday that it had delivered 131 aircraft to customers in the first quarter of 2012. Boeing, which released its delivery numbers Thursday, handed over 137 jets in the first quarter. Boeing's total was boosted by deliveries of its new 787 and 747-8 aircraft.

Boeing also leads Airbus in orders through the first quarter with 412 net orders, compared to Airbus' 90. Airbus officials had predicted a drop in orders this year after winning 1,419 in 2011. Many of those orders were for Airbus' A320 new engine option jet. This year, Boeing is finalizing orders for its answer to the A320neo, the 737 MAX.
