WestJet planes slightly emptier in November

(Reuters) - WestJet Airlines reported slightly emptier planes in November, data showed on Monday, as capacity increases at the carrier outflanked a rise in demand.

Canada's second-biggest airline's load factor -- the percentage of available seats filled with paying customers -- fell to 77.6 percent last month from 77.7 percent in November last year.

The low-cost airline said revenue passenger miles, or traffic, rose 4.4 percent to 1.34 billion year over year, and capacity, measured in available seat miles, was up 4.5 percent to 1.72 billion over the same period.

WestJet today announced November 2011 traffic results with a load factor of 77.6 per cent. The airline flew an additional 51,000 guests this November compared to November of last year.

"Achieving our second-highest November load factor, as we continued to grow capacity, is an accomplishment of which we're very proud. I thank WestJetters for their amazing energy and the care for our guests that they bring to work every day," said WestJet President and CEO Gregg Saretsky.

"We are noticing a slight shift in booking patterns this holiday season with more travel spilling into January as school breaks are starting later in December," added Gregg Saretsky. "We are now expecting our projected fourth quarter 2011 year-over-year RASM growth to be between four and five per cent."
