Biman Bangladesh Airlines managing director summoned over misconduct with High Court judge

A High Court bench has summoned the managing director of Biman Bangladesh Airlines and the captain of a flight over misconduct with a judge.

Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik and Justice Jahangir Hossain Salim came up with the order on Monday in response to a writ petition by Supreme Court lawyer, Deputy Attorney General ABM Altaf Hossain told The Daily Star.

Advocate Riaz Uddin Khan moved the petition following reports recently published in some newspapers including the daily Ittefaq and the daily Janakantha on the indecent behaviour with a HC judge in the flight at Shahjalal International Airport.

The petitioner said the judge went to Singapore from Bangladesh on October 28. His ticket was promoted to business class from economy class on the day before his flying. A notification in this regard was sent to the airport on the same day.

On the next day, the judge was seated on the business class 1(A) seat of the flight BG 084. Later, the flight crew and its captain behaved indecently with the judge. The incident caused 37 minutes delay for a Singapore-bound flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines for its departure, the petition said.

The HC bench on Monday directed Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Biman Bangladesh Airlines Air Commodore (retd) Mohammad Zakiul Islam and Captain Enamul Haque to appear before it at 10:30am on December 11 to explain their conducts with the judge.

The judges asked them to bring a list of the crew of Biman’s BG 084 flight and the list of ticket holders who have been promoted from economy class to business class over the last two years.

It also issued a rule upon them to explain why legal action should not be taken against them and why they should not be punished for their misbehaviour with the judge.

Barrister Rokanuddin Mahmud appeared for the petitioner.

The bench also heard arguments from senior lawyers Abdul Baset Majumder, Yousuf Hossain Humayun and Manzill Musrshid.
