Police apprehend man after he reportedly shot his vehicle at Ellsworth Air Force Base

1:05 p.m. update: The suspect is in custody and currently being interviewed at the Box Elder Police Department, according to Police Chief Tim Ryan.

Charges are anticipated against the suspect and those will be released, along with the suspect's name, later today, Ryan said.

The chief commended the South Dakota Highway Patrol for locating the suspect on Elk Vale Road in Rapid City and escorting him to the Box Elder Pizza Hut parking lot. Box Elder police officers took the suspect into custody without incident, Ryan said.

12:42 p.m. update: The suspect apprehended in the shooting incident was the spouse of an active duty airman, according to a press release from the Ellsworth public affairs office. There were no known injuries, according to the press release. Ellsworth officials are investigating the incident.

12:05 p.m. update: A suspect in a shooting incident at the Centennial Estates housing area on Ellsworth Air Force Base has been apprehended, said Nathan Gallahan, a tech sergeant with the Ellsworth public affairs office.

The shooting began at 10:40 a.m. and involved the spouse of an Ellsworth airman, Gallahan said. He did not have any more information about the suspect or the shooting.

Ellsworth had returned to normal operating conditions at noon.

11:39 a.m. Update: Law enforcement spotted the vehicle on Elk Vale Road and are now escorting the man to Ellsworth Air Force Base.

Original Story: Rapid City and Box Elder police departments are now looking for a man who may have threatened suicide and reportedly shot his own vehicle before leaving Ellsworth Air Force base on Monday morning.

Nathan Gallahan, tech sergeant with the public affairs office, said our emergency responders are responding to a report of shots being fired in a housing area on base. That's all we know at this time.

According to scanner traffic, police are looking for a 28-year-old man who is driving a red 2002 GMC Yukon. It is unclear if he has any weapons at this time and police are urging caution for anyone who may encounter him. According to the scanner traffic, the vehicle was last seen east of Rapid City.

The Box Elder Police Chief Tim Ryan said his department is now sending three units to the base.
