U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds heading to 2012 Lauderdale Air Show. (With Video)

FORT LAUDERDALE— The 2012 Lauderdale Air Show landed the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds on Monday to headline the city's first airshow in five years.

"It's like having U-2 perform at your concert," said Bryan Lilley, the show's president. "You don't need U-2 to have a concert, but if you have U-2 you know it's going to be a really great concert."

The Thunderbirds, who performed at the city's last air show in 2007, announced their 2012 schedule at the International Council of Air Shows annual convention in Las Vegas.

The six F-16 fighter jets will be the finale of both days of the show, set for April 28 and 29, Lilley said.

The show has already lined up a number of civilian jet teams and a commitment from the U.S. Navy Seals Leap Frogs, an elite team of parachutists.

"They do things with parachutes that kind of defy the imagination," Lilley said. "They do some really amazing stuff."
