Turkey Modernizes Somali Airport

December 16, 2011

MOGADISHU (A.A) - Turkey has undertaken the project to modernize the airport in the Somali capital of Mogadishu.

A nine-member team from Turkish State Airports Management (DHMI) went to Mogadishu and launched initiatives to modernize the airport and install air traffic devices.

"The Mogadishu Airport serves under very primitive conditions, and the only international flight to Mogadishu was from Kenya," a DHMI executive responsible for the team, Aydin Sarsik told AA correspondent.

Sarsik also said Turkish Airlines (THY) would start operating flights to Somalia after the airport was modernized, and thus humanitarian aid would more rapidly be sent to this country.
