US and French aircrafts join Spitfire’s 70th anniversary celebrations

The United States Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle Demonstration will make its UK debut at the air show celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Spitfire at Imperial War Museum Duxford, near Cambridge, this weekend.

The unit, which operates from Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in North Carolina as part of the USAF 4th Fighter Wing, is the only Air Force unit that can trace its history back to Great Britain.

One of the three Royal Air Force Eagle Squadrons - No 133 - in which American volunteers were serving, reformed as the 3rd RAF Eagle Squadron in July 1941 and was based at Duxford until October 1941, operating from its satellite fighter station in Fowlmere.

When the US officially entered the war the squadrons were transferred and formed the 4th Fighter Group.

The show on Saturday September 3 and Sunday September 4 will include aerial displays from the original Mark I Spitfire through to the Mark XVI.

Other highlights include Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Lancaster, Spitfire and Hurricane, the French Air Force Alpha Jet, RAF Sea King, Army Apache, RAF King Air, Royal Navy Historic Flight Swordfish, B-17 Flying Fortress Sally B and the Italian Air Force C-27J and the Polish Air Force M-28.
