Bexar County deputies are investigating the shooting death of a man whose body was found in a shower in South Bexar County Sunday night.

Mark Ortega, 42, was shot multiple times and killed in the shower in a building in the 14800 block of Cassiano Road, in the city of Elmendorf, according to Deputy Chief Dale Bennett, spokesman for the Bexar County Sheriff's Office.

Sgt. Ray Pollard said Ortega's wife left the home in the morning for work, and then returned home around 7:30 p.m. after going grocery shopping. She couldn't find her husband to help her unload the groceries, walked around the home shouting his name, then saw blood on the concrete outside of a hangar where Ortega worked on experimental planes, Pollard said.

“She looked inside and saw his body lying face-down in a pool of blood,” Pollard said. “She was kind of upset, understandably.”

Pollard said the hangar, which also houses a bathroom and a shower, is next to a private landing strip. There were no weapons found near the body, but numerous spent shell casings, Pollard said. Deputies were still trying to determine the type of weapon used in the shooting.

Officers questioned Ortega's wife. Detectives on Monday morning were knocking on neighbors' doors to see if anyone knew anything about the incident. So far, deputies have no suspects or motives.

“We haven't ruled anybody out yet,” Pollard said, “but we're still trying to contact people. We're still in the infancy of our investigation.”
