Etihad Airways, Abu Dhabi’s flagship carrier, said Monday it is scouting for additional apartments in the UAE capital to house its growing workforce.
The state-backed carrier expects to have around 27,000 staff by the end of the decade, as it strives to keep pace with its growing fleet. Etihad’s multibillion-dollar order book features 57 wide-body planes, including 10 A380s, 25 Airbus A350s and 35 Boeing 787s.
“Etihad continues to expand,” the airline said in a statement on Monday. “As part of our ongoing commitment to providing our staff with the best possible housing, we are always looking for opportunities in good locations within Abu Dhabi.
“At the moment, we are actively recruiting for staff - both UAE national and expatriate.”
Rival Gulf carrier Emirates Airline said in May it would buy a plot of land from Meydan to build purpose-build accommodation for its employees in Dubai. The deal centered on a 2.9m sq ft plot near Meydan race course, purchased on a 15-year lease-to-own basis, to develop 528 houses.
Emirates, the largest international airline, is advertising 4,000 cabin-crew jobs as it strives to attract international staff for the world’s biggest fleet of Airbus superjumbos. The carrier needs to boost flight attendant numbers by a third to 16,000 during the year through March as it adds five double-deck, 517-seat A380s, for a total of 20.
Etihad said last year it would no longer provide accommodation allowances to new staff choosing to live outside Abu Dhabi under a new policy. The airline said the move was an operational decision and that housing options in the emirate were “plentiful”.
