Flight Conducted Under: Part 91: General Aviation - Personal

On February 26, 2020 about 1645 mountain standard time, an Arion Lightning airplane, N1XF, was destroyed when it was involved in an accident near Jerome, Idaho. The pilot sustained minor injuries. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 91 personal flight.

The pilot reported that during the long cross country flight he conducted fuel calculations throughout the flight. About 25 nautical miles from his intended destination, he calculated 6.3 gallons remaining (4.3 usable) for about 38-40 minutes of flight. Shortly thereafter, the engine sputtered and quit. He turned off the right tank fuel selector and turned on the left tank fuel selector. In addition, he reduced the airspeed to 75 knots, turned off autopilot and redirected to Jerome County Airport (JER), Jerome, Idaho. The engine ran again for several seconds before it sputtered again. Both fuel selector valves were set to the on position, and shortly thereafter he switched to just the left fuel tank. The engine ran momentarily, but subsequently sputtered and quit. Unable to make it to the airport, the pilot elected to land on a nearby roadway. However, as the airplane descended, he observed fences on both sides of the road and made a left turn to a nearby field. As he turned, the left wing stalled and the airplane impacted the ground.

The airplane has been recovered to a secure location for further examination.

CHURCH CREEK, Md.- A pilot of a small airplane made an emergency landing in a Dorchester County bean field this afternoon.

The pilot, 68-year-old Val Albert, of Fairfax, Virginia, was not injured, Maryland State Police said.

According to police, contact with the 2012 Arion Lightning single engine plane was lost shortly before 3 p.m. A state police helicopter was already in the air completing an assignment and responded to conduct a search. The plane was located, and the helicopter landed nearby.

When the helicopter arrived, Albert was standing outside the aircraft. No one on the ground was struck or hurt.

The cause of the emergency landing has not been determined, and damage to the plane is unknown at this time. Officials from the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have been contacted, and arrangements are being made to have the plane removed from the field.
