Drone pilot class registration open: Whiteside County Airport (KSQI), Rock Falls, Illinois

DIXON – A private pilot ground-training course through Sauk Valley Community College will start Tuesday at Whiteside County Airport, 10950 Hoover Road, Rock Falls.

The 14-week course’s sessions will be from 6:30 to 9 p.m., every Tuesday starting this Tuesday through Dec. 5.

The instructor is Glen McCure. Students will prepare for the Federal Aviation Administration Private Pilot Knowledge Exam. There is an additional fee for the exam.

The cost is $240, plus books and materials (which can be purchased through McClure). Personal aviation materials can be brought the first night for instructor evaluation. Flying and airtime is not included.

Other classes are:

• A 12-week Introduction to small Unmanned Aerial Systems Drone class, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays and 9:30 a.m. to noon Saturdays, starting Wednesday.

Richard Eichman will be the instructor. The course is an introduction to drones, and helps prepare students to take the FFA’s Remote Pilot exam. Previous experience with remote-controlled aircraft is not needed. Quadcopters will be the focus.

The cost is $240. Students must have the textbooks “UAS Remote Pilot Prep (ASA)” and “Pilot’s Guide of Aeronautical Knowledge,” as well as a small indoor or outdoor quadcopter without an altitude hold or GPS lock.
