Accident occurred September 02, 2017 at Newark Liberty International Airport (KEWR), New Jersey

A 54-year-old woman from Orange was struck in the head by an airplane propeller early Saturday morning, Port Authority police said.

The woman, who was a cleaner for PrimeFlight, was hit by the moving propeller at 2:20 a.m. while at Newark Liberty International Airport and taken to University Hospital in Newark, said Joe Pentangelo, senior police public information officer. Pentangelo said the injury was serious.

The woman, whose identity has not been disclosed, is in critical condition.

The accident did not cause any disruptions to the airport's operations and the plane she was hit by was not on the runway.

The victim was struck by a CommutAir aircraft, which operate flights for United Express, said Maggie Schmerin, director of brand public relations for United Airlines.

"We are saddened to learn that a PrimeFlight employee was seriously injured at Newark International Airport," United said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with her and her family and colleagues. We are working closely with Prime Flight, CommutAir and local authorities to determine how this occurred."
