Congressman helps couple win legal battle over skydiving

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — A Florida appeals court is siding with a couple that wants to operate a skydiving business on their north Florida farm.

James and Melanie Nipper won their appeal with the help of U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz, who was working as an attorney before being sworn into office this month.

The 1st District Court of Appeal ruled Tuesday a lower court erred when it issued an order blocking the Nipper family from using their 290-acre farm in northern Walton County for skydiving. County authorities asserted the business violated local zoning ordinances.

But the three judge panel concluded the ordinance was vague, noting that outdoor activities such as golf are allowed.

Melanie and James Nipper, a former member of the U.S. Army Golden Knights parachute team, have operated a skydiving business since 2008.
