Raton Municipal Airport (KRTN), New Mexico: Rockin’ Wings & Wheels kicks off June 25

RATON – Planes, custom cars and music will take over the landing strip at the Raton Municipal Airport Wednesday (June 25) for the mid-week inaugural celebration of Raton Rockin’ Wings & Wheels.

The event kicks off at 9 a.m. with a “Rockin’” reception  featuring jukebox music, soda shop treats and exhibits at the Raton Museum downtown at 108 S. 2nd Street. At about 10:30 a.m., downtown Raton visitors and locals can enjoy a car cruise and airplane fly-by before heading to the airport 12 miles southwest of Raton at 33788 Hwy. 64 for showtime at 1:30 p.m. Spectators should expect to see hundreds of custom classic cars and a variety of small aircraft.

Get out the poodle skirts and dance shoes for Raton’s own 1950s Rock & Roll band, The Fireballs, who are scheduled to play on the airport grounds from 5-6:30 p.m.

The Fireballs were New Mexico’s first rock & roll band to become internationally known, according to the Rockin’ Wings & Wheels website. The band’s original members include George Tomsco (lead guitar, vocals, writer), Stan Lark (vocals, electric & acoustic bass), Eric Budd (drums), Chuck Tharp (lead vocal, writer), and Dan Trammell (rhythm guitar). After performing for the first time during a Raton High School PTA (Parents Teacher Association) talent contest, giving birth to — what is known as — Southwest style Rock & Roll, as the website ratonwingsnwheels.com states.

For event participants, car show registration is at 9 a.m. at the Best Western on 473 Clayton Road. Vender set-up begins at the airport at 10:30 a.m. The Holiday Inn Express in Raton will close the festivities June 26 by serving cinnamon buns and coffee to participating car and plane exhibitors at 8 a.m.
