Aviation expo moved to Fort Collins-Loveland Municipal Airport (KFNL): Rocky Mountain Aviation Expo will feature various displays and activities for aviation enthusiasts

The fourth-annual Rocky Mountain Aviation Expo will be held 7 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Fort Collins-Loveland Municipal Airport for the first time.

The Colorado Pilots Association is hosting the expo, formerly known as the Light Sport Aircraft Expo. It was held at the Front Range Airport near Denver for the past three years and moved this year due to logistical issues. Organizers expect about 2,000 attendees and between 200 to 300 aircraft flying in, almost double the attendees last year. Pilots who fly in receive a 50-cent per gallon fuel discount coupon.

"The reason why we figure it's going to be double is we are in an airspace that is not as crowded, and being in a proximity that's more open to flying," said Rick Raesz, president of the Fort Collins/Loveland Pilot's Association and president of the Experimental Aircraft Association. "A lot of pilots do not like flying in that congested airspace down there that will come to this one."

The expo will feature about 30-50 displays of helicopters, Warbirds — aircrafts used during wartime — the newest Light Sport Aircraft, as well as experimental aircraft and classics. Attendees will have the opportunity to stop by about 40 aircraft-related vendors and manufacturers and get information about the pilots' associations.

President of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association Mark Baker will lead a town-hall-style meeting at noon at the expo. Raesz said AOPA is the largest aviation organization in the world, with more than 500,000 members. Baker will be discussing issues related to pilots' rights and general aviation.

According to Raesz, this event will create a lot of exposure for the organization through various aviation publications and media.

"This one event alone could attract many people that we would normally have to spend ... thousands in advertising to get their attention," he said.

Raesz said the event is a chance for people to receive career guidance or just general information for those who are interested.

"It's just a really good opportunity for people who have an interest in aviation in any way, shape or form to take part," Raesz said.

The event is free and is open to flyers and non-flyers alike with food, activities, flight simulations and door prizes.
